Suggested lawn-watering restrictions
Hudson County Executive Tom DeGise and United Water New Jersey officials are asking the company’s customers in six North Hudson County towns to conserve water due to low water storage levels. The most effective way to do this is to water lawns only between the hours of 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., the county said.
The request applies to the following North Hudson communities: Guttenberg, North Bergen, Secaucus, Union City, Weehawken, and West New York.
The company also advised customers not to open fire hydrants. Residents are asked to report open fire hydrants to the local police department. They can also call United Water’s 24 hour emergency department at (201) 487-0011.

Drivers’ safety class for seniors
The AARP, Liberty Health, and Meadowlands Hospital Medical Center will again offer New Jersey residents a Drivers’ Safety Program.
The course, which will include classroom instruction on defensive driving and other techniques, has the potential to both reduce points on drivers licenses, with the approval of NJ Motor Vehicles, and could also earn a participant a rebate from auto insurance companies. Although AARP is co-sponsoring the program, participants do not need to be members of the group to take part in the course.
The next course will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 21 and Thursday, Sept., 23 from 6 to 10 p.m. at Meadowlands Hospital Medical Center, located at 55 Meadowlands Parkway in Secaucus.
There is a $12 fee for per person and attendance is required both days for any of the benefits to be valid. For more information, call (201) 392-3266.

Employees vote to unionize
Workers at AFL Web, Printing, a print shop in Secaucus, voted two weeks ago unionize and to affiliate with Local 1-L of the Graphic Communications Conference of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.
Organizing effort started in the fall of 2009. “We were working 12-hour days without a lunch break,” complained former employee and Secaucus resident Joe Fix. “We had to schedule sick days two weeks in advance.”
Twelve AFL Web employees who were part of the organizing effort were laid off, a circumstance that is now being investigated by the National Labor Relations Board.
