Hoboken police cancel charity race because of fiscal issue

HOBOKEN — According to a story posted Tuesday by NJ.com, the Hoboken Police Department has canceled its annual 5K charity run for Alzheimer’s because it was told not to use taxpayer money on it.
The story notes that the event – held for the last 18 years – usually raises $10,000 to $15,000 for the Alzheimer’s Association of North Jersey. But it cost $6,000 to $10,000 from the police budget, and that money wasn’t reimbursed from the proceeds.
Lt. Ken Ferrante told NJ.com that last year, the state-appointed Fiscal Monitor Judy Tripodi told the police that they could not “be in the charity business” by using taxpayer funds to run the race.
Instead, they’ll run a junior police academy for kids this month.
