Hoboken school board to meet; principals leaving

HOBOKEN — The Hoboken Board of Education will hold its only August meeting this Tuesday night at 7 p.m. It’s likely that among the matters to be discussed will be the impending retirements of many principals in the district.
Who will replace them? That’s also a matter to consider. As noted in a Reporter cover story a month ago, some of the retirements were announced only recently, including middle school Principal Charles Tortorella (see related links below).
On the school board’s website, the superintendent wrote an update letter to parents and began with a note on school uniforms:

I realize that it is not yet time for the usual “Back to School” letter, but I missed you, so here is a brief pre-Back to School note. At the outset let me state that the matter of school uniforms will be deferred to my successor. The survey showed that the majority of the elementary school community was in favor of khaki slacks or knee length shorts, and a collared “golf” shirt in the ‘color’ of the particular elementary school. It is your option as a parent to attire your child in that manner, or to choose similar attire of your choice, which would be in keeping with the policy of the board and the school in this regard. Basically, including our eighth through twelfth graders, we require modest attire below the waist, and a collared shirt/top above the waist, with all garments reaching at least the waist. OK, you are now all set to hit Target and Kohl’s and JC Penney and Macy’s and . . .

For more on that, see the district website here.
