‘Slow down and enjoy’

To the Editor:
Things are changing in our society, but some of these changes are not for the better. People are less concerned with their fellow man. It is a “me first” society.
Look around Bayonne. You see people riding their bicycles on the sidewalk. This is a serious problem, especially on Broadway. Cyclists come from behind and do not signal their presence to pedestrians. A serious injury could occur should the pedestrian move to either the left or to the right.
Drivers are less concerned with obeying the law. How many times do drivers turn right on red but never come to a complete stop before turning? “No Turn on Red Signs” are generally ignored, especially at the intersection of Route 440 and 32nd Street. Some drivers ignore this sign in the areas around schools. Other drivers feel it is ok to double park and block traffic. Some drivers park by fire hydrants; some park by the yellow line. Some drivers never signal their intention to turn. How many drivers come to a complete stop when a pedestrian is in a crosswalk? It is the law!
Everyone is in such a hurry.
Years ago, people cared about their neighbors. When they parked their cars, they checked to make sure that they parked in the middle of the parking space. Now people pull in to the space and don’t care about anyone but themselves.
Drive on the highway and you see people shifting lanes just to get to their destination a little quicker. But do they signal their intentions? Ninety percent of the time, they just switch lanes. Most of these drivers drive small cars. God forbid they get hit by a SUV or a truck – then it is all over for them. Does anybody obey the speed limit? I feel for these professional truck drivers who encounter these drivers every day.
Let us try to be more considerate of our fellow citizens. Don’t be in such a hurry. Life is too short. Slow down and enjoy!
