JERSEY CITY — Parents of children living in the Montgomery Gardens Housing Complex in downtown Jersey City planned a rally for Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. to protest the crime in their neighborhood and throughout the city.
Their rally is in reaction to the July 16 shooting at the complex when five-year-old Hasmera Clayton was shot in the neck after a gunman was aiming at people at a evening block party.
The suspect, 18-year-old Demetrius Thompson, was arrested the next day and is being held on $300,000 bail.
The rally will be held near the site of the shooting. It will be the second rally in five days. Earlier, one was held at the complex. There, local officials and community activists decried the shooting of the girl as well as shootings taking place across Jersey City. – RK
