JC Council to vote on bonding to acquire Sixth Street Embankment

JERSEY CITY — The City Council will vote at their Wednesday council meeting to introduce, for a first reading, an ordinance allowing the city to issue $7.7 million in bonds to acquire the Sixth Street Embankment from New York property owner Steve Hyman and his wife.
The historic railroad walls – spanning six blocks along Sixth Street downtown from Marin Boulevard to Brunswick Street in downtown Jersey City – carried a Pennsylvania Railroad freight line from 1902 to the 1970s.
The city along with other advocates want to develop the Embankment property as a park, while Hyman and his wife wanted to demolish the property and build two-family homes on the cleared site.
If the ordinance is approved at the next council meeting, scheduled for July 14, then the legal battle between the city and the Hymans over the Embankment going back more than four years could come to an end. – RK
