HOBOKEN — A resolution to lease a new, but temporary, site for Hoboken’s DPW garage was tabled at a special meeting Tuesday night. This action will allow the administration to negotiate for more than one location.
The council is likely to move its existing garage from Observer Highway, as they have sold the land to a developer. The closing is expected to take place in August.
The City Council presented residents with two temporary options – one in town and one in Jersey City. The Hoboken option is outdoor storage space on Clinton Street, between 15th and 16th Streets, combined with indoor space at the existing Stevens garage at 600 Sinatra Drive. This would cost the city $3,750 per month, including utilities.
The second option is to build the garage in a neighborhood in Jersey City, though Jersey City Mayor Healy already expressed his disapproval of this location to the council. The site is at 173 16th St. and provides both indoor and outdoor space, but would cost Hoboken $25,000 per month.
A member of the public, Ronnie Miller, presented a third option. He offered a portion of the garage he owns at 16th and Jefferson in Hoboken to the city for about $2,292 per month, not including utilities. Miller has a towing contract with Hoboken and currently uses the garage for his own trucks.
