Three people hurt as car hits bus on Avenue C
An 88-year-old woman suffered abrasions to her head and a 76-year-old man suffered cuts on his feet and legs on Sunday, according to the Bayonne police. They are investigating an accident in which a green Ford Explorer plowed through a stop sign near 15th Street and Avenue C, hitting a bus, which then struck a number of additional parked cars.
The two elderly people were among three passengers on the Academy bus who were transported to Bayonne Medical Center on June 13.
According to the police, James Vallese, 21, of Bayonne, said the brakes on the Explorer failed. The impact caused the bus traveling southbound on Avenue C to veer to the opposite lane, where it struck numerous parked cars, the police said.
Police said no charges have yet been filed regarding the accident.
Man empty baby carriage charged with theft
A woman approached police officers patrolling the Hudson Bergen Light Rail line at about 11 a.m. on June 12 saying that her purse was missing. Based on a description of the man she said was sitting next to her on the train, the police said they stopped Lenard Wiggins, 24, of Jersey City, whom they say was pushing an empty baby carriage over the foot bridge from the 45th Street Light Rail station. Officers said they saw the strap of the purse sticking out from the storage compartment of the carriage, and upon inspection, it turned out to be the woman’s purse, which contained about $200 in cash, credit cards, and other items.
Wiggins was charged with theft. A background search, police said, discovered two outstanding warrants for $6,000 in unpaid fines to Bayonne Municipal Court, and about $2,500 in unpaid fines to Jersey City Municipal Court, police said. Wiggins was sent to the Hudson County Correctional Facility in Kearny.
Jersey City man charged with auto break-in
A resident called the police on June 13 to say that someone was in his neighbor’s parked car on East 28th Street, but it wasn’t the neighbor. Based on the description given, police detained three different men on Broadway, and then brought in the witness. According to police, the witness picked out Calvin John Ford of Jersey City as the person in the car. The police said they called the car’s owner and inspected the car and found the glove compartment open and its contents scattered on the floor, but apparently nothing missing.
However, Ford was charged with burglary theft from an auto.
Of the two other suspects, one was a 17-year-old Jersey City resident who was unconnected to the crime, but was discovered to be in possession of a knife and was charged, police said. The third man was released.
