OLIVER, DOROTHY

A funeral service was held June 7 for Dorothy “Nana” Oliver, a long-time resident of Bayonne and Jersey City. She died May 31 at the Chateau Rochelle Park, New Jersey, Long Term Care Facility. She was 85 years old. Nana was born on the beautiful islands of the British West Indies. She graduated from Bayonne High School and then continued her education and attained a bachelor’s degree from Jersey City State University. Nana was a lifelong learner and would constantly read and research the latest trends in her field in order to remain current and relevant to her young students and also to each and every one of her children, grand, great, and great-great grandchildren. She taught at Bayonne High School for over 30 years before retiring in 2006. Nana loved good food and celebrating birthdays. Nana was all about the family and education. She was the wife of the late Charles Edward Washington and Charles Hubert Oliver; mother of Beryl Webb Glover, Deborah Barnwell Lassiter, Jeffery Noel Washington; grandmother of Charles Webb and spouse Taryn, Robyn Webb and grandson-in-law Jonathan “Skip” Lee, Bryon Barnwell and spouse Orsi, and Lauren Barnwell, Shah Washington and spouse Loraine, Hassan Washington and spouse Ursa, Mikal Washington and spouse Femi, Omar Washington, Jaleel Washington and Jazzine, and Raquel Glover. In addition, Nana is also survived by a host of friends, colleagues, former students, 20 great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter, and daughter of the late Mano and Beryl Cuett Steveson.
