JC promoted as place to watch fireworks – but not its own this year

JERSEY CITY — Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy announced last week that the city’s annual Fourth of July concert and fireworks display will be canceled due to the city’s current fiscal tightening. Instead of the Independence Day event, funding will be allocated toward approximately 20 other concerts and cultural events during the months of July and August. However, for the second year in a row, Macy’s will be shooting their fireworks over the Hudson River, so residents can enjoy those from the waterfront. In fact, a public relations firm sent out a release on Friday encouraging tourists to visit the city’s Newport section to watch the works.
The relase said: “For the second year in a row, the Macy’s Fireworks show will be returning to the Hudson River and the newly built walkway connecting Hoboken to Newport gives you front row seats! Situated directly on the Hudson with magnificent views of the spectacular Manhattan skyline, Newport will allow you and your family the weekend vacation you love to take without having to travel a far distance and most importantly, without breaking the bank. Newport is conveniently situated 5 minutes from NYC via PATH train or Ferry ride. Start the weekend off by checking into the beautiful Westin, Jersey City Newport overlooking the Newport marina. Enjoy one of the 13 restaurants ranging in a variety of cuisine offerings. Enjoy a romantic evening with your husband at Michael Anthony’s or South City Grill situated right on the river or go for a pizza with the kids at Bertucci’s!”
In addition to Summerfest, the Division of Cultural Affairs will also be organizing its annual Dance Series at the J. Owen Grundy Pier and the MLK Concerts at the HUB. Other events are still under discussion.
