Congressman Sires applauds Weehawken students for fundraising
Rep. Albio Sires (D-13th) met with 32 students from Weehawken High School on May 21 to commend them on raising $1,000 through bake sales for the Navajo Code Talkers. Sires presented a check to the Navajo Nation to assist them in the development of the Navajo Code Talkers Museum. The Navajo Code Talkers Museum will honor the Navajo community and the contributions of the Navajo Code Talkers.
“I applaud these students and commend their efforts in raising funds for the Navajo Code Talkers Foundation,” said Rep. Sires. “Through their fundraising, these students have educated others about the brave Navajo Code Talkers and the crucial role they played in our nation’s history.”
During the early months of World War II, Japanese intelligence experts were able to decipher every code the U.S. forces devised. To combat this, a civilian who had grown up on a Navajo reservation began a Navajo Code Talker test program. The code was then modified and expanded to conceal war time messages, and the Japanese Imperial Army and Navy were never able to crack the code.
The Navajo Code Talkers Foundation is located in Window Rock, Ariz. and the Navajo Code Talkers Museum and Veterans Center Project will be built in New Mexico.
Body pulled from Weehawken waterfront
The body of a woman was recovered from the Hudson River last week on the Weehawken waterfront near the area of 70th Street.
According to published reports, the North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue Marine Unit was dispatched to site but the body had already been retrieved by the New York City police’s harbor patrol.
The woman, believed to be in her 20’s had not yet been identified by press time.
Man arrested for bank robberies, including one in Weehawken
A man from Kearny who was arrested for allegedly stealing over $500,000 in a bank robbery in North Arlington is also a suspect in a robbery at a TD Bank in Weehawken in April.
According to Deputy Chief Jeff Fulcher, Robert Martin was arrested by agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation as a suspect in bank robberies in North Arlington and Union City and attempted robberies at banks in Union City and Weehawken.
Martin is currently being held in federal custody on federal charges of bank robbery.
Fulcher said the arrests were made possible by a joint operation between the FBI and Weehawken, Union City, and North Arlington police detectives.
Weehawken Library presents ‘Crime on-Line’ reading and discussion
A discussion of the hard boiled/noir fiction and Internet markets for writers and readers will be hosted at the Weehawken Library by Gary Cahill (author and member of the Mystery Writers of America/NY) on June 3 at 7 p.m. Admission is free. Gary will be reading from his story “Corner of River and Rain” which was published online this month by short-story.me Genre Fiction, a website and e-zine devoted to new literary mystery, fantasy, sci-fi and horror and crime. Softball teams to sponsor a car wash
The Cal Ripken Baseball and Girls Softball teams will hold a fundraiser car wash at the Pathmark parking lot above Arricale Field on June 5 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The cost will be $5 for cars and $8 for vans. Proceeds will benefit the teams.

Kearny Marsh clean-up to be held on National Trail Day Weekend
The N.J. Meadowlands Commission and Bergen County Audubon Society (BCAS) will be sponsoring a two-hour clean-up at the Kearny Marsh on June 6 at 10 a.m. The trails will be cleaned by foot and the marsh by canoe.
Canoes, paddles, life vests, trash bags, and water will be supplied, but participants should bring their own weed clippers and work gloves.
The group will meet at the northeast corner of the Gunnel Oval off Schuyler Avenue at 10 a.m. Those who wish to carpool can meet at the visitors’ parking lot at DeKorte Park in Lyndhurst at 9:40 a.m.
