Union City woman charged with using kids to shoplift
Delia Devalle, 31, of Palisades Avenue in Union City, was charged with allegedly using her children to steal $220.95 worth of merchandise from the Bayonne Shop and Stop on May 17, Bayonne police said.
Police said they were called to the supermarket by the store manager, who claimed he saw Devalle in the company of three children, traveling around the store, putting some items into a shopping cart, and allegedly putting others into a duffle bag. The kids allegedly walked out with the duffel bag.
The manager told police that he stopped the kids outside the store. Then, James Butler, a man from Jersey City, approached the manager and told the manager he had driven Devalle and the kids to the supermarket, police said. Butler was not charged with shoplifting, but was found to have a warrant out of Jersey City for $750 in unpaid fines, police said.
Devalle, who was charged with shoplifting and with using minors to commit a crime, also had outstanding fines from Union City for $1,141, police said. She was sent to the Hudson County Correctional Facility in Kearny.
Two of the children, 14 and 4, were released to an aunt.
Light rail arrests catch men with $25K in unpaid fines
Police arrested two men on the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail for allegedly lacking valid tickets, only to discover they both allegedly had outstanding unpaid fines totaling nearly $25,000.
According to the Bayonne police, the two men arrested on May 19 near the 34th Street station were Charles Bordeaux, 27, of Armstrong Avenue in Jersey City, and Patrick Holmes, 22, of West 44th Street in Bayonne, as they traveled toward the 22nd Street station.
Bordeaux, police said, allegedly had an expired ticket while Holmes allegedly had no ticket at all.
A criminal background check showed that Bordeaux had three outstanding warrants for unpaid fines totally $13,500, and one warrant from Hudson County Superior Court, which required an appearance before a judge, police said.
Holmes, police said, had an outstanding warrant from Bayonne for unpaid fines totally $10,000.
Both men were charged with theft of services and sent to the Hudson County Correctional Facility in Kearny.
Girl charged with stealing makeup, sunglasses
A 16-year-old Bayonne girl was charged with shoplifting from ShopRite after store security said they saw her allegedly putting eye liner in her pants pocket and removing the price tag from a pair of sunglasses, police said.
According to the Bayonne police, security approached the girl and she removed the items. The girl was released into the custody of her sister. The total value was placed at $13.95, police said.
Woman charged with stealing booze
Amany Hakim, 23, of Avenue B in Bayonne, was charged with shoplifting from a liquor store on Broadway on May 21 after the store manager said he saw her allegedly putting bottles into her purse and leaving the store.
Police said the manager gave them a description and a direction of flight. A patrol car responding to the call pulled her over at 43rd Street and Avenue E, where officers said they saw three bottles in her open purse. When she was unable to produce a receipt, they arrested her. The store manager identified her as the person he saw in the store. The total value of the bottles was placed at $89.85, police said.
Accident leads to DWI arrest
Police said Venancio Albanez, 31, of 18th Street in Bayonne, hit another car while Albanez was trying to make a turn onto Prospect Avenue at about 1:29 p.m. on May 22. The other car was stopped for a traffic light when Venancio, in a blue pickup truck, turned off East 30th Street, police said.
The police said when they arrived at the scene, Venancio’s eyes appeared bloodshot, his breath smelled of alcohol, and he struggled to find the paperwork for his vehicle. The police said he also did poorly during a field sobriety test. They transported him to headquarters, charging him with driving while intoxicated.
Motorcycle test drive leads to DWI arrest
Police said they found Damian Kasztelan, 23, of Broadway, on the ground behind the firing range near West 16th Street, at about 3:18 p.m. on May 23, injured and allegedly intoxicated with a motorcycle near him at the curb.
He apparently told police he had come to the site by bicycle, but police said a man on the scene had arranged to meet Kasztelan in the park at the bottom of the hill to discuss the purchase of the motorcycle. Kasztelan asked for a test ride, took off up the hill and promptly crashed into the curb, losing control of the motorcycle. The police said they transported him to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was treated for his injuries. He was charged with driving while intoxicated.
