Memorial Day events in NB, Guttenberg

Several Memorial Day services will be held in North Bergen and Guttenberg to commemorate the sacrifices made by men and women who died while serving the military.
In North Bergen, the Edward McDowell VFW post and auxiliary will hold memorial services at the North Bergen Recreation Center, located at 64th Street, on Thursday, May 27 at 7 p.m. Wreathes and post color guards will fire the volley for all deceased veterans. All are welcome to attend.
In Guttenberg, the events will start with the 1st Calvary Division flag being raised at the Anna L. Klein School on May 27. Two soldiers who were at a 1965 battle in Vietnam will be visiting the school.
On May 31, the town will hold its parade at 11 a.m., following a ceremony at the veterans’ monument on 71st Street and J.F.K. Boulevard East. Lt. Col. Omera of the U.S. Air Force will be present. Awards will be given out to veterans and a Gold Star Mother will be honored.
This year it is June Agusta, who lost her son Army Sgt. Eric J. Fernandez when he was killed in action on Dec. 4, 2007 in Baji, Iraq.

Military can ride ferry for free during Fleet Week

Continuing a 23-year tradition, NY Waterway is providing free commuter ferry service and sightseeing tours for all active duty military personnel and veterans during Fleet Week, May 26 to June 2.
Service men and women must present ID showing their active duty or veteran status to ride free. Reservations are recommended for sightseeing tours.
NY Waterway Tours include: the 90-Minute Skyline Cruise, departing from the West 38th Street Tours Terminal; the 90-Minute City Lights Cruise, departing from the West 38th Street Tours Terminal beginning May 29, and the Gateway to America Cruise, departing from the Battery Maritime Building next to the Staten Island Ferry Terminal.

Weight loss seminar at PMC

A weight loss surgical option seminar will be held on June 3 at Palisades Medical Center.
The event will run from 6:30 to 9 p.m., with free transportation being provided from 60th Street and Bergenline Avenue starting at 5:30 p.m. Free parking and refreshments will also be provided.

Seniors’ summer program in the Meadowlands

Cooking demonstrations, concerts, and art workshops, and nature outings are among the highlights the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission (NJMC) will offer this summer as part of its 2010 Senior Program.
The schedule of more than a dozen free events kicks off on Tuesday, June 8 at 1 p.m. with “New Jersey’s Wonder Fruit,” a talk and food tasting detailing the history, health benefits, and preparation of New Jersey blueberries. All events take place at the Meadowlands Environment Center, an NJMC facility operated by Ramapo College of New Jersey.
