WEEHAWKEN BRIEFS

Accomplice in Park Avenue hotel murder pleads guilty

The remaining co-defendant in the 2006 murder case of Jennifer Moore pleaded guilty last week, according to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office.
Krystal Riordan of New York refused to take a plea agreement last month and was set to go to trial. But she pleaded guilty on Thursday to kidnapping and hindering apprehension.
Riordan could face 15 to 40 years in prison when she is sentenced June 24.
Riordan and her co-defendant, Draymond Coleman, 38, were charged with the 2006 murder of Jennifer Moore, 18, of Bergen County, in the now-defunct Park Avenue Hotel in Weehawken. The teenager’s body was strangled, then stuffed in a suitcase and dumped in a West New York garbage container.
Coleman pleaded guilty last month and incriminated Riordan in his statement. He now faces up to 50 years in prison when he is sentenced on May 13.

Uncontested Weehawken election to be held Tuesday

Weehawken residents may vote on May 11 for any five candidates for the Town Council. From among the five winners, they will choose a mayor from among themselves.
The incumbent slate, led by Mayor Richard Turner, is the only one running for office this year.
In Weehawken’s form of government, five people run for council and choose a part-time mayor from among themselves.
Instead of campaigning for themselves, the mayor and the Town Council have spent the past month holding neighborhood forums to talk with residents and find out their goals, problems, and objectives for the next four years in Weehawken.
Hours to vote on Tuesday are 6 a.m. until 8 p.m. To find out where to vote near you contact the Town Clerk’s office at (201) 319-6022.

Best selling author returns to talk at library

Author James T. Fisher, who wrote the bestselling book On the Irish Waterfront, The Crusader, the Movie and the Soul of the Port of New York, will return to lecture at the Weehawken Library on May 19 at 7 p.m.

Fisher first visited the library last March to an enthusiastic standing room only audience as he led a lively and fascinating lecture about his book, which explores how the true story of New York/New Jersey dockworkers, unions, mob bosses, politicians and a Jesuit priest led to the making of one of the great American motion pictures, On the Waterfront. At that time, many patrons were unable to get in to see Fisher, so the library is hosting a second visit. Those interested are reminded that seating is limited so they must call the library to make a reservation at (201) 863-7823. At the event, signed copies of the book will be sold for $20.
