Jersey City resident Alexander Calderon snapped these shots of a van fire on Mercer Street between Jersey Avenue and Varick Street on April 20, around 5 p.m. He explained: “A van belonging to a contractor caught fire apparently from the engine. It expanded to the rest of the van, where there were some chemicals, paint cans, and other flammable materials.
“The quick response from the Fire Department, Engine 5, was the key to avoid further explosions that rumbled the downtown area.”
