School budgets appear to pass in Secaucus, Hoboken, Jersey City, Weehawken; down in North Bergen, Guttenberg

HUDSON COUNTY — Jersey City residents — who faced massive state aid cuts in their school system leading to impending teacher layoffs — managed to vote to pass their school budget Tuesday night. This will, at least, prevent even more local cuts for the time being.
Hoboken, Secaucus, and Weehawken residents also passed their budgets by a narrow margin, according to Tuesday night’s machine results.
However, in North Bergen and Guttenberg, the budgets will likely be slashed further after being voted down. When a school budget is voted down by the public, it is sent to the Board of Commissioners for further recommendations and usually more cuts.
