School board elections this week

On April 20 week North Bergen and Guttenberg residents will be asked to vote on school board members and budgets.
The North Bergen Board of Education’s $111.1 million 2010-2011 fiscal budget will collect $39.9 million in taxes to fund it, a 3.9 percent increase.
Incumbents Charlotte DiGennaro, Miguel Hector and Edward LaTour are running for reelection, while Herbert Shaw, William Koehler and Cesar Vega are opposing them.
In Guttenberg, the $13. million 2010-2011 fiscal budget’s tax levy increased by 7.5 percent to $9.4 million.
President Sari Zuckerman, Elsa Schwarz and Margarita Batista are incumbents running for reelection, while newcomer Elaine Silverstone is a newcomer running for an unexpired term. All are running unopposed.
Officials from both districts have said that state funding cuts have caused budgets to increase this year, while services may be cut and many teachers are expected to be laid off.

Girl Scouts to host “El Día de Los Niños”

T he Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey will host “El Día de Los Niños,” a celebration of young Americans, later this month.
The event will be held on Friday, April 30 at Jose Marti Freshman Academy, located at 1800 Summit Ave. in Union City from 4 to 8 p.m.
Everyone in the community is invited for a day of music, arts and crafts, games and much more.

Free knee and hip replacement seminar

Palisades Medical Center is hosting a free seminar on hip and knee replacement surgeries on May 4.
The event will discuss current progressive joint replacement surgery options that could remedy long-term pain that cannot be resolved from medications.
Featured speakers include Dr. Richard Salzer and Dr. Asit Shah.
It will be held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Free transportation will be available from 60th Street and Bergenline Avenue beginning at 5:30 p.m.
Admission and parking are also free, and refreshments will be provided.

High Tech hosts ‘A Night of Dance’

High Tech High School’s Dance Department decided to celebrate the rich heritage of American dance through “Pulse! – A Night of Dance.”
The performances were held at the Jay Todd Black Box Theater at the North Hudson Center of Hudson County Schools of Technology on April 15, 16 and 17.
High Tech dance majors performed a piece by legendary jazz choreographer Danny Buraczewski, as well as original works choreographed by the students themselves.
“The students have put together a terrific evening of a wide range of dances,” says Trista DeFilippis, High Tech’s veteran dance instructor.

Free community health screenings

Palisades Medical Center will host several free health screenings and education programs.
On April 25 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Immaculate Heart Mary Chapel, located at 76th Street and Broadway, will host PMC. There will be free screenings, including blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, body mass index, peak flow, pulse oximetery and oral cancer screenings.
On May 1 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., St. Joseph of Palisades Church will be the site of a family health fair.
In addition to the screenings listed above heart rate and percentage of oxygen in the capillary blood, HIV testing and breast exams will also be available to the public for free.
The health fair will include games and activities for children, including a clown, face painting, and taekwondo and karate demonstrations.
