Two Union City residents murdered, dismembered
Two people whose dismembered bodies were found in garbage bags in Linden on Monday were determined to be Union City residents.
The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that the names of the victims are Lazaro Calero, 49, and Maria Torres, 48, and that Calero was renting a room in the apartment where Torres lived.
The two bodies were found distributed among six bags along the side of the road in Linden after neighbors complained of flies swarming around illegally dumped garbage.
Assistant Prosecutor Guy Gregory said Thursday afternoon that there are no indications that the two had any relationship besides living together, but he added that is something they may never know for sure.
It had been suggested by neighbors near the apartment on Fourth Street and Bergenline Avenue, where Torres and Calero lived, that the crime may have taken place there, and then the bodies were moved. However, neither the Hudson County nor the Union County Prosecutor’s Offices would confirm this. One source said that the murders had to have taken place in Hudson County; otherwise the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office would not be involved.
When asked about possible motives or suspects, both offices said at press time that they were not releasing information.

New members welcomed to Women’s Club meeting
The next meeting of the West New York Women’s Club will take place on April 12 at Hudson Hall, 6018 Hudson Ave., at 6:30 p.m. New members are welcome and attendees may bring cookies, cake, or a snack to share.
The guest speaker will be Margaret Abrams of Women Rising in Jersey City. Women Rising, governed and managed by women, assists women and their families to achieve self sufficiency and live safe, fulfilling and productive lives, through social services, economic development and advocacy services.
The organization will be the recipient of all funds raised at the Women’s Club Third Annual Walkathon, being held on May 22. Attendees will be able to pick up a sponsorship form for the walkathon at the meeting.
Upcoming concert dedicated to veterans
The City of Union City will present “Alexander Diaz in Concert” on April 17 at 7 p.m. at the Union City Performing Arts Center, 2500 Kennedy Blvd.
The concert is dedicated to “all veterans who have fought and fallen for our right to be free.”
The show will feature a five-piece band playing everything from Broadway show tunes to American Standards, as well as some well renowned Latin Standards. Several guest artists will also be joining the award winning performer, who was born and raised in Union City, on stage.

Free artist exhibition to be held
On April 18, the Hispanic Mercantile Federation will hold their eighth annual Hispanic-American Artists Exhibition with over 40 artists from over 15 countries. Spring semester begins at Park PAC
Students ranging in age from 5 to 75 years old can sharpen their art skills and self-expression with classes in art, singing, theater, music theory, and various dance forms on Saturdays at the Park Performing Arts Center, based in Union City.
Spring classes will run from April 24 to June 19. At the end of the spring semester the students will put on a final performance in the theater for family and friends. Students can register for the spring semester April 12 until April 23 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the theater.

Italian descendants sought for exchange program
The Federazione Molfettesi D’America seeks descendants of Molfetta, Italy in order to participate in an exchange program with the City of Molfetta, Italy. Twelve people between the age of 18 and 40 will be selected to travel overseas during the first week in September, 2010.
