Secaucus School Board to discuss 2010-2011 budgetPosted March 29, 2010

SECAUCUS – The Secaucus Board of Education will publicly release its budget for the 2010-2011 school year at a meeting tonight at the Huber Street School. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m.
The school board is releasing this budget just two weeks after Gov. Chris Christie announced steep cuts in education. Under the governor’s proposed $29.3 billion fiscal year 2011 budget, public schools throughout New Jersey will lose $820 million in state aid. The spending cuts in education are among several Christie has proposed to close a $2 billion deficit.
Secaucus will lose all $1.75 million of its state aid. Local officials have also said the cuts will force the school district to use up its budget surplus of $800,000.
According to several sources, the school district has responded to the cuts by trimming spending next year. Core programs – such athletic programs, pre-kindergarten, all-day kindergarten, field trips, and guidance counseling – have been left intact, according to sources. – E. Assata Wright
