A funeral service was held March 5 at Cornerstone Church of Christ, Jersey City, for Clara Lee Powers. She passed away Feb. 28. Clara was born in Meigs, Ga. to Preston and Rosalee Connage Lewis. Clara was a talented entrepreneur in Jersey City for many years. Affectionately called “Momma”, she operated Clara’s Variety Store at 195 Jackson Ave. on Martin Luther King in the 1970s, a restaurant on Pacific Avenue, a grocery store on 116 Jackson Ave. and another store on Martin Luther King Drive, which sold religious artifacts. Clara was predeceased by her husband Matthew; her children, Mamie and Arthur; her parents, and her sister Lillie and brother Archie. Surviving to cherish Clara’s memory are her children Robert A. Lee (Barbara), Doris Magee and Gloria D. Patterson; her step-children Sharlene Jones, Diane Clay, Richard, Jackie, Matthew, Vertis and Charles Powers; her sisters Juanita Tillman (Pat), Ella Lewis, Agnes Roberts (Lee), Catherine Thomas, Angeline Wade and Leola Davis; her brothers Clifford and Edward Lewis; 18 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; six great great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
