Dear Editor:
The topic I want to discuss is: I was born and raised in the United States of America and I am a U.S. Citizen. I am also disabled and I receive a social security check. I have Medicare and Medicaid and have the Family First card food stamps. So today I called up the Meals on Wheels Program because I am always running out of food towards the end of the month. A young woman said I was not eligible because I am not 60 years and up. I told her I was 51 years old and she said that the State of New Jersey has new guide lines for being eligible for the Meals on Wheels Program.
I really think that is unfair. Where does a person, like myself, go and get more assistance like food banks and churches? What really makes me very angry is people that come here on man-made rafts and boats and expect our government to hand them a silver platter.
Like I have said I am a 100 percent American citizen and I really think it is unfair that these programs say I am not eligible any more. I am permanently disabled, I have a homemaker and I am just about home bound and it is quite difficult to get to a store for food shopping. I think I should be eligible for the Meals on Wheels program. I think there are a lot of people on the Meals on Wheels program that should not be on it. I hope the State of New Jersey checks up on everyone that is on the Meals on Wheels program to see if they meet the guide lines. When I was told this today I was very sad and angry because my illness is real and I am not faking my disability. I really need Meals on Wheels to get better meals then I already get.
Sincerely,
Brian Silvani
