Parent and advocate for our children

Dear Editor:
This letter is in reference to the editorial letter written by Paul Marlu Maiellaro “April is right around the corner”
On Saturday December 5 I had the privilege and opportunity to participate in the “Aids Walk” event at Ferris High School, where my son is currently a student.
During the walk about 150 students, parents and faculty members were led by the school administration to raise awareness and funds. After the walk we were invited to the schools auditorium to watch a short film and for refreshments served in the school cafeteria.
As I mentioned on Channel 1 to my (amazement) in the auditorium, garbage was very visible around the seats and aisles. Upon entering the cafeteria the floors were dirty with spots and stains. The boys’ bathroom appeared that it was not clean to standards and the toilets appeared not to have been flushed.
Mr. Maiellaro we can sit down and review the facilities meeting tape, I will bring the popcorn and you will see and hear that at no time do I mention the food service department or workers.
As a parent, board member, and tax payer I attribute my findings only to my Alma matter, Ferris High School and not the school district as a whole. Further I never mention that I had volunteers, but rather individuals seeking employment through our local workforce who would happily do the job. I have many friends who are employed in the district and work hard as maintenance, custodians, food service workers and I respect the work they do daily!
In closing I find your comments very disrespectful as a Board member and parent. “Never bite the hand that feeds you.” Being born and raised in Jersey City and have attended our public schools and since graduating from college I have provided valuable hours to our school district. I have been on the board since 2002 and have not received one cent for the countless hours of service to our children and teachers.
As a parent and advocate for our children, wanting a sanitary, clean learning environment is what I was elected for. The least I think about is April! Since tomorrow is not promised to anyone. By the way in respect to my father who was a hard-working maintenance worker the name is Valentin not Valentine!

Respectfully,
Angel L. Valentin
