Funeral mass was held Feb. 9 at St. Ann’s Church, Hoboken, for Louis Anthony Muraca, a retired Hoboken fire captain and city native. He passed away peacefully Feb. 5th with his family at his bedside at the Robert Wood Johnson Hospital, New Brunswick.
Louis joined the Fire Department in 1960 and became captain in 1975 before retiring in 1988. Born in Hoboken in 1935, he graduated from A.J. Demarest High School, where he enjoyed playing football along with his brother Jack. Both were inducted into the Hoboken/Demarest High School Sports Athletic Hall of Fame. After serving in the U.S. Navy as a Hospital Corpsman, he joined the Hoboken Fire Department and served for 28 years, rising to the rank of captain, where he won numerous citations for valor. Capt. Muraca was also a member of the Hoboken Exempt Firemen’s Association, the FMBA, the Hoboken Fire Officers’ Association, and the retired NJ Superior Officers Fireman’s Association. Capt.
Muraca is survived by his wife of more than 46 years, Enid (nee Toher); his children, James, Kathleen and David; his grandchildren, Kevin, Steven and Wallis; his daughter-in-law Sandra Muraca; son-in-law David Lippman, and family friend, Sharon Benya. He is also survived by his sisters, Theresa Muraca, Annette Lenge and her husband Anthony as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was pre-deceased by his parents, Vincenzo and Bridget (Nardello), and his brother Giacomo “Jack” Muraca. Services arranged by the Failla Memorial Home, Hoboken.
