JERSEY CITY — City Hall is going ahead with plans to layoff 278 muncipal employees by the end of this month.
City spokesperson Jennifer Morrill confirmed layoff rumors, first brought up this week, by saying that 240 seasonals, 36 provisional employees and two unclassified employees (mayoral aides) will be terminated from their positions on Friday, Feb. 26.
Notices are scheduled to start going out this coming Tuesday.
According to Morrill, the city anticipates approximate savings from the layoffs for the remainder of this fiscal year of $1,319,671, and approximate savings for the next fiscal year at $4,286,879.
Layoffs are being done to help the city with their current budget woes as they have a shortfall conservatively estimated at $42 million.
Provisional employees are those who are not permanent and have to work a certain period of time before acheiving permanent status. Seasonal employees are those individuals who are retained, usually full-time on a year to year basis, at low wages and no benefits. – RK
