New, young head of Hoboken schools appoined in contentious vote

HOBOKEN — Tuesday night, the Board of Education appointed a new superintendent of schools, Dr. Frank Romano, with a somewhat contentious 7 to 2 vote.
Board members Carrie Gilliard and Maureen Sullivan broke with the majority and voted against the appointment of Romano.
But Board members Rose Markle, Theresa Minutillo, and Ruth McAllister, and new board member Irene Sobolov, sided with minority board members Carmelo Garcia, Jim Farina, and Francis Rhodes-Kearns to appoint the new superintendent. Romano was an assistant superintendent at Fort Lee and Gilliard complained that the children deserved a new superintendent with experience in the position. Sullivan said she had heard some bad feedback from from references. The board also appointed an interim principal for Hoboken High School due to the resignation of Dr. Lorraine Cella.
