CASHIN, JOHN T. JR

A funeral mass was offered Jan. 30 at Sts. Peter and Paul RC Church, Hoboken, for John T. Cashin, Jr., 78. He passed away Jan. 26 at Englewood Hospital. His co-workers called him “Jolly”. He was that and so much more: loving, judicious, kind, witty, humorous, curious, and smart. John was born in the Bronx, and attended Regis High School in NYC and graduated from Cardinal Hayes High School. He received a BS in Marine Engineering from the New York Maritime College at Fort Schuyler and a MS in Mechanical Engineering from CCNY; plus business and management courses from Pace Univ., Stevens Institute of Technology and CCNY. John served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Afterwards, he sailed the world as a marine engineer, achieving his chief engineer’s license in both steam and motor and later adding nuclear power technology and a professional engineers license to his list of credentials. Over the span of his career, he worked for several notable engineering firms, spending the last twenty plus years with The Manhattan Transit Authority in New York. He was a longtime member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. John was a teacher, both officially and unofficially. As the former, he taught members of the maritime union those subjects needed to upgrade their licenses. He had a curious mind and was happy to share his knowledge with others. His avocation was music; his primary instrument the trombone. As a teenager he assembled his own band. In later life he played with many New Jersey marching bands. He was the husband of Anna Mae; father of John T. Cashin III and Ellen DeMasi and her husband Peter; grandfather of Amelia, Abigail, and Kieran; brother of Patricia Cashin and the late Cecilia Brown. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Services arranged by the Lawton-Turso Funeral Home, Hoboken.
