Dear Editor:
I would like to commend the Secaucus School District’s Board of Education and School Administration for their recently launched S.A.I.L. (Service Activities Involvement and Leadership) Program. This service learning initiative is a step in the right direction that will prepare today’s students to be community service-oriented, and to be more aware of their civic and social responsibility to their own local communities and the global community as a whole. In today’s reality of global community interaction and association brought about by rapid technological advances, preparing Secaucus students to have a deeper understanding of the dynamic and diverse society that we live in today will teach them to be more responsive to the needs of others. Through this safe service-learning environment, they will become the future pillars and cornerstones for better communities and a better world. This program could also be a powerful stepping stone in their exploration of areas of interest for future careers.
We at Fil-Aid, a Secaucus based, New Jersey registered non-profit charity and civic organization, are greatly humbled and honored to be one of the beneficiaries of this great program. The community service that S.A.I.L. provided for Fil-Aid’s donation- in-kind drive will benefit typhoon-affected students and typhoon-orphaned children 8,500 miles away. The goods that Secaucus students collected are scheduled for distribution by the end of January 2010, and the work of our students will surely touch the hearts of the recipients. For this accomplishment, we salute the Secaucus students and their Service Learning Coordinator and Student Government Advisors for their enthusiasm, dedication and hard work for reaching out and furthering our mission of service. Fil-Aid would be honored to continue our relationship with the Secaucus School District in providing future service-learning opportunities for students.
The support and involvement that our community could provide to S.A.I.L. Program by giving Secaucus students the opportunity to serve and learn as well is highly encouraged. You may contact the Service Learning Coordinator Stacey Lee at (201) 974-2022 for more information about this program.
To the Students of Secaucus School District: “Sail away and reach your aspirations to serve others and learn from the experience.”
