Seasonal and H1N1 flu vaccine provided for seniors

Mayor Richard F. Turner and the Township Council wish to advise all Weehawken Seniors that the Senior Center will be conducting a Seasonal and H1N1 Flu Vaccine Clinic on Wednesday, Jan. 20. If you wish to receive either of these vaccines, please call the Senior Center at 201-319-6060 to sign up.

Woman’s Club to make hats for kids with cancer

The Woman’s Club of Weehawken invites everyone with a fanciful imagination and some creative talent to help with their Heavenly Hat project at their January meeting on Jan. 25 beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the Weehawken Senior Nutritional Center, 201 Highwood Ave., Weehawken.
The club members will be decorating 77 knitted skull caps for the Heavenly Hats Foundation, which provides brand new hats to children who have lost their hair during cancer treatment or other medical conditions that result in hair loss. Decorative materials such as felts, yarns, threads, beads, buttons and fabrics will be provided for the project. Creativity encouraged, experience not required. Members and guests are encouraged to wear their favorite hats for inspiration and to add a touch of whimsy to the evening. Light refreshments provided.

Weehawken Weekenders

The Weehawken Weekenders have two upcoming events planned. On Friday, Jan. 22 the Weehawken Weekenders will be headed to Pegasus in the Meadowlands. Ticket price is $60 per person which includes the buffet, admission to the track, program and the Weehawken Weekenders Trophy Race.
On Saturday, March 6, the group is going to The Sands Casino in Bethlehem, PA. Ticket price is $30 per person which includes transportation from the Pathmark Parking lot at 9 a.m., driver gratuity and package to be announced. Free classes offered for family members of those with mental illness

NAMI Hudson County, an affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, is a countywide support group that holds meetings for families whose members suffer from mental illness. NAMI is conducting free classes to train family members on how to help each other and their mentally ill relatives.
The classes will focus on schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, clinical depression, panic disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Course topics include clinical treatment of these illnesses and coping mechanisms for families.
The course is offered to parents/caregivers of children and adolescents with mental health issues. NAMI NJ-trained family members will teach the six-week course. All classes and course materials are free.
