HUDSON COUNTY — According to the Record of Hackensack, several area teenagers and a 27-year-old man allegedly called the parents of one of the teenagers and said that she had been kidnapped. The ransom requested was $50,000.
All of the suspects were from North Bergen, except for the “kidnapped” girl, who is from West New York.
According to the newspaper:
“Police learned of the ruse at 3 p.m. Monday, when the family of a 16-year-old girl, whom police would not identify, came into police headquarters to report that they had received a phone call telling them their daughter had been kidnapped.
“Police called the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office for assistance and the detectives from the two agencies tracked down friends of the girl, who confessed to the crime.
‘I don’t know what she was asking this kind of money from her family for because she knew they didn’t have the money,’ [Lt. Frank] Cannella said.”
