Last night of ‘the Naughties’

On New Year’s Eve, where to ring in the end of the decade

On Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009 at 11:59 p.m., Hudson County and the world will turn the page on a decade that brought us American Idol, the iPhone, and President George W. Bush.
Several local bars and restaurants will host year-end parties or serve up specials to cap off the 2000s, or as some are calling it, “the Naughties.”
Decades in the past were easily named – the Roaring ’20s or the Psychedelic ’60, but there has been much debate over what this past decade should be called.

_____________

Time Magazine called it “The Worst Decade Ever.”
________

Some said “the Aughts,” others called it “the Ohs,” both names playing on the numerical representation. Some settled on “the Naughties” or even “the Noughties,” derived from the word “nought,” meaning zero.
The decade started out on an auspicious note. The Y2K buzz in 2000 was a frenzy of technological fear that amounted to much ado about nothing.
The 1970s were referred to as the “Me Decade,” leading some to call the 2000s the “You Decade” because of such user-empowering technologies as blogging and YouTube.
With the Sept.11 attacks, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Hurricane Katrina, and the economic collapse, many Americans are more than ready to say goodbye to “the Naughties.” Such events led Time Magazine to call it “The Worst Decade Ever.”
So, if nothing else, at least “the Naughties” have given us reason to celebrate now that the decade is over. After midnight, it’s time for “the Tens.”
Read on to find out where to celebrate in Hoboken and Jersey City.
