Cops arrest homeless man in connection with Downtown JC stabbing murder; victim laid to rest

JERSEY CITY — The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office announced Monday morning that Martey J. Williams, 41, was formally charged in the stabbing murder of Jacqueline Reyes, 27, in her apartment Tuesday afternoon in the Paulus Hook Towers in downtown Jersey City.
Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said that Williams was apprehended by Jersey City police Sunday morning at Exchange Place, some time after he was denied entry into Paulus Hook Towers at 100 Montgomery St. when he allegedly tried to reenter. DeFazio said he resisted arrest and had to be subdued.
DeFazio said Williams was believed to be homeless, but “had been in the building on a number of occasions.” However, DeFazio said there was no apparent connection between Williams and any tenants in the building including the victim.
DeFazio said after police were able to establish based on their investigation that Williams resembled the person seen on security cameras located in the building.
Williams is currently being kept at the Jersey City Medical Center for evaluation before he is bought to the Hudson County Correctional Facility in Kearny. Bail for Williams is set at $1 million.
The investigation is ongoing into the woman’s stabbing, which also led to serious injuries for her 9-moth old son, Ivan Reyes Jr., who is currently in stable condition at University Hospital in Newark. DeFazio credits the work of the Jersey City Police Major Case Squad and the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Squad with cracking the case.
The arrest comes the same day that Jacqueline Reyes was laid to rest at Holy Name Cemetary in Jersey City. Before the burial, there was a funeral service for Reyes at St. Bridget’s Church, also on Montgomery Street in Jersey City. After the service was over, a teary, emotional Ivan Reyes, husband of the victim, was consoling a relative as both entered into the limo that took them to the cemetary. – RK
