Concert to benefit former member of The Schramms, Yo La Tengo

A diverse line-up of local musicians will perform a concert on Sunday, Dec. 13 at Maxwell’s, 1039 Washington St., Hoboken, to raise money to help bassist Terry Karydes in her struggle with Parkinson’s disease.
The music starts at 6 p.m. and the suggested admission price is $15. All proceeds will aid Karydes.
In the early 1990s, Karydes, who had played with Georgia and Those Guys, an embryonic version of Hoboken-based alternative band Yo La Tengo, was a member of The Schramms, the brainchild of guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter Dave Schramm.

Schramm left Yo La Tengo in 1986 and began working up material with fellow Human Switchboard alumnus Ron Metz on drums and bassist Karydes. After Karydes’ bass was stolen, she moved over to keyboards. She was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in the late 1990s.
Parkinson’s, a nervous system disorder, also has afflicted actor Michael J. Fox, who has raised awareness about it.
Karydes currently lives in Brooklyn and continues to write music. She has 13 songs in various stages of production with local producers. She also has 25 years of experience working in the book publishing industry, focused on production and design management, copyediting, graphic design, art direction, typesetting, and page layout. Last year she began working in the health, wellness, and fitness industry.
“The thing is, most people don’t try to beat it because doctors say you can’t,” Karydes said of her struggle with Parkinson’s. “But I don’t listen to them.”

A musician dedicated to change

She said the things that keep her well most effectively “are not covered by insurance: vitamins, loving care and assistance at home, exercise, Veetrag Yoga Peace meditation and Yoga healing practice, organic hormone free food, clean filtered water, massage, Thai Chi, Pilates, Alexander Technique, Chi Gong.”
Karydes said she is trying to create awareness in the medical community of an unfilled need for appropriately trained home care directed to wellness, rather than assisting one in a patient’s degeneration process.
“The medical system is political and change begins at home,” she said. “My success would help a lot of people to know what they need to do to help themselves and each other. My dream is to create a healing home for people suffering these unnecessary neurological ailments and call it Love House.”
