Answer may lie in consumer (holiday) spending

Mixed signals on the economy abound. Favorable news about home sales is released within days of bad news about rising unemployment. But for all the attention paid to foreclosures and government bailouts, economists say consumer spending – and whether it’s going up or down – holds the key to turning the recession around.
To get a barometer on how consumers are feeling about the economy these days, the Reporter asked five locals whether the economy would affect their holiday budgets this year.
