Funeral services were held Nov. 11 for Mary Barbitta. She was the daughter of Sicilian immigrants, Sebastiano and Carmela Casamento Belardi. She grew up on the family grape farm in Portland, NY. She unfortunately had a shortened childhood when at a young age her mother passed away and Mary assumed the child rearing responsibilities of her younger siblings. Mary sacrificed her own education and personal life while emotionally and financially assisting her siblings to further their educations. Mary and her siblings moved between Portland and Brooklyn numerous times before Mary settled in Jersey City, and married Jimmy Barbitta. She worked many long hard years as a member of the ILGWU. Mary was a deeply religious woman, pure of heart, and very altruistic. Mary’s abundantly generous nature was always available to her family and friends in times of happiness and in times of need. Her deep faith exemplified her strong religious beliefs that became the foundation of her loving and supportive nature. Mary was predeceased by her youngest sister, Anne Golub, to whom Mary was the only mother Anne ever knew. Survivors include: Rosemary Merino, David Golub, Joel Golub and Susan Golub-Oglesby. The family is indebted to Rosemary for her devotion and care of Aunt Mary in the past. She was also pre-deceased by her husband Jimmy, brothers and sisters, Mike Belardi, Ted Belardi, Frances Belardi and Rose LeBlanc; many other loving nieces and nephews and her extended Barbitta family. Many thanks to the caregivers at Water View Center in Cedar Grove for their compassionate care of her. Services arranged by the Bizub-Parker Funeral Home, Little Falls.
