Hoboken turnout high; counting of absentees started at 7

HOBOKEN — Now that polls have closed, City Clerk Jim Farina said he expected turnout to be 12,000 to 13,000 voters, based on noon turnout today of approximately 7,400. Another 1,200 absentee ballots were to be counted at the Hudson County Board of Elections office, Farina said, starting at 7 p.m. (Hopefully there won’t be boxes of them found later like last time!)
If the winner of the Hoboken race has a margin of victory greater than the number of absentee ballots collected, then the race could be called tonight. But if the winner depends on the outcome of the absentee votes, then Hoboken may take a backseat to the governor’s race at the Board of Elections, a city source said.
Meanwhile, Secaucus is a different story. Their voters already know that Michael Gonnelli is the new mayor, and his three council allies swept the election, trouncing allies of former mayor Dennis Elwell. — TJC
