SECAUCUS, BAYONNE, AND HOBOKEN — The Associated Press just posted a story about this summer’s 44 corruption arrests and how they are affecting the upcoming elections, including in Hoboken, Secaucus, and Bayonne.
They note that Hoboken is having an election to replace former Mayor Peter Cammarano, who petered out after being arrested for corruption in July.
In that portion of the piece, taxpayer Helen Hirsch asks how candidates in a mile-square city could spend so much money on elections and mailers when people are starving.
In the Secaucus portion, unopposed mayoral shoe-in Michael Gonnelli muses that he wishes former Mayor Dennis Elwell was still in the race against him, so he could beat him fair and square.
There’s also a section about former Bayonne councilman Anthony Chiappone’s legal troubles, which are unrelated to the 44 arrests this summer.
The story starts with a joke about how you can tell a New Jersey politician (by the handcuff marks on his wrists). Ha!
