Dear Editor:
When she first ran for Mayor in the spring, Dawn Zimmer made a lot of impressive promises. Chief among them was a pledge to cut property taxes by 25 per cent and an assurance that she would present a detailed, fair budget within a month of taking office. Now, Dawn has been both the Mayor and Council President for over two months, and neither has happened.
Hoboken taxpayers need a break. Years of budget mismanagement led to a state takeover and a huge tax increase, and we have all felt the pain. So when Dawn promised to cut taxes by such a large amount, people listened. Now that there has been no budget presented and no tax cut at all, it’s clear that her promises were just another political stunt.
At this week’s council meeting, Dawn and her Finance Director admitted that there will be no budget presented until December. This is completely unacceptable. I’m not asking for a miracle here, but can’t she and her council allies at least hold one budget hearing? Hoboken needs to be put on the right track, and the first thing it needs is a real budget.
