Last night, Oct. 7 at 8:23 p.m., firefighters were called to the scene of a fire that caused two buildings, located at 415 66th St. about one block east of Bergenline Ave, to sustain damage. The fire spread rapidly due to high winds, according to North Hudson Regional Fire Chief Brion McEldowney. “It may have begun in the alley between the two buildings,” said McEldowney, who then noted that the incident will be investigated to find out if it was a crime of arson.
Firefighters were able to reach the scene in 2.5 minutes, according to McEldowney. He was also able to confirm that no residents were harmed, though one firefighter was sent to Hoboken University Hospital for a shoulder injury that may have been caused by exertion of force while helping to put out the fire.
McEldowney said that in total, approximately 50 firefighters from eight20companies were on the scene, with the men from squad 10 arriving first. Squad 10 originates from the 65th Street and Hudson Ave. Jersey City Fire Dept. which is currently sharing the facilities of the North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue.
McEldowney believes that approximately two families live in each building. The occupants were relocated by the office of emergency management. McEldowney said that although the outside of both buildings sustained damage that could be considered as heavy, the interior’s damage was considered moderate. A decision will be made soon by the homeowner and by the construction official to see if the building is clear for occupants to return. McEldowney said it is likely they will be able to return today or tomorrow.
