Police were diverting traffic from Bayonne into Jersey City Tuesday afternoon after both lanes across the Newark Bay Bridge on the New Jersey Turnpike Extension collapsed. Police officials said a sinkhole formed in the west bound lanes and for a time forced the closure of traffic to the bridge entirely. After about six hours, police managed to open one lane east bound into Bayonne, Jersey City and Hoboken. Traffic seeking to leave Bayonne was being diverted. This is expected to affect traffic leaving the Holland Tunnel and will likely result in significant rush hour delays. Traffic will likely be diverted from the Turnpike Extension as far east as the Holland Tunnel entrace to the New Jersey Turnpike.
