Fighting back

BMC kicks off Breast Cancer Awareness month with seminars at Newport Mall

It is estimated that 192,370 women will be diagnosed with and 40,170 women will die of breast cancer in 2009.
In fact, the incidence of breast cancer in women in the United States is 1 in 8, or 13 percent of the total population. For women in the U.S., breast cancer death rates are higher than those for any other cancer besides lung cancer.
This unfortunate news, however, has a ray of hope in that from 2001 to 2004, breast cancer incidence rates in the U.S. decreased by 3.5 percent per year. These decreases are thought to be the result of treatment advances, earlier detection through screening, and increased awareness.

Bayonne Medical Center in Bayonne, in conjunction with Newport Mall in Jersey City, will hold a series of events during the month of October to provide people with more information.
For Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the two entities have launched Paint the Mall Pink, a variety of breast cancer awareness activities and other health-related programming that will be held at the mall throughout October.
“We are pleased to be part of this exciting program that teaches consumers about a disease that will be diagnosed in one in eight U.S. women during their lifetime,” said Newport Centre Director of Mall Marketing Jill Daniel. “The Paint The Mall Pink program will create an opportunity for our community to support an important cause and to become a part of a nationwide effort to promote early detection of breast cancer and eventually eradicate this deadly disease.”
The National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) program is dedicated to increasing awareness about the importance of the early detection of breast cancer through a nationwide campaign. NBCAM started as a weeklong campaign in 1985 with two founding members. During October, which is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, medical organizations around the nation join forces to spread the message that early detection of breast cancer followed by prompt treatment saves lives.
