Acting Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer is the leading contender in a four-way race for mayor of Hoboken in the special election Nov. 3.
City Councilwoman Beth Mason, businessman Frank Raia, and former corrections officer Patricia Waiters have also filed their petitions with the Hudson County Clerk’s Office as of 2 p.m.
Interested candidates must file by 4 p.m.
The county is handling the election since it is concurrent with the state governor’s race.
Mason finished third in the May mayoral race, missing the runoff beteween Zimmer and former Mayor Peter Cammarano. She kicked off her campiagn on Tuesday at the Brass Rail, calling out Zimmer for her “dual office holding” of mayor and City Council president.
Raia is the former school board president who ran an unsuccessful mayoral campaign in 2005, an unsuccessful county freeholer campaign in 2008, and an unsuccessful Board of Education campaign earlier this year.
Waiters, who has sued the county for wrongful termination, ran for City Council earlier this year, but had little mainstream support.
Some people expected Municipal Judge Kimberly Glatt to enter the race, but she only picked up petitions this week and may have used the threat of a run for posturing. Glatt would be a wild card in the race, and some think she could pull in a significant voter tally.
Zimmer took over the mayor’s seat following Cammarano’s arrest for extortion two months ago. — TJC
