Cancer Support Awareness Day Sept. 23 at BMC

To the Editor:
As the second-highest cause of death in the country, cancer is truly a disease that touches everyone. And yet, there are many positive actions you can take to help keep yourself well.
Early detection, more advanced treatments, and wellness therapies offered by cancer support organizations have improved survival rates dramatically in the last decade. These methods work, but only if you take advantage of them.
Knowledge is power – that’s why we are asking everyone to participate in a program of Cancer Support Awareness outreach Wednesday afternoon and evening, 4 to 7 p.m. on Sept. 23 in the cafeteria of the Bayonne Medical Center. Speakers from important cancer support organizations will give an introduction of their services, and representatives will be available to discuss their programs, sign up new members for services, distribute literature to help you assess your possible risks for cancer and just to answer any questions you may have.
In addition, the Gilda’s Club Players will entertain with humorous skits developed from their own experiences living and laughing with cancer.
This outreach event is being coordinated by Gilda’s Club NNJ, Ruth Dugan, president of the board; Bayonne Medical Center, Agnes Mangelli, member of the board; and is supported by the following organizations: The Community Cancer Support Group, Linda Klimkowski, board chairman; Gilda’s Club Northern New Jersey, Robin Gilman, program director; the Madeline Fiadini LoRe Foundation, Madeline LoRe, director; the Bayonne Ostomy Alliance, Larry Pilarski, director; and the Bayonne Medical Center.
Be the gatekeeper of your own well-being. We urge you to attend this free event, and learn how much quality support is available for people living with cancer. Someone you know may need your advice.
