According to North Bergen Lt. Frank Cannella, commander of the investigative bureau, a man who allegedly threatened police officers with a 10-inch kitchen knife was safely taken into custody.
Police received a call domestic violence call at 9 a.m. about Victor Morel, 28, of Union City when he allegedly attempted to gain entrance into his “significant other’s” home on Kennedy Boulevard, said Cannella.
Morel allegedly told police that he didn’t have to leave and when they alerted him that he was under arrest, he allegedly drew a knife out of the hem of his jeans and allegedly began waving it at the officers.
“He continued to scream [allegedly] ‘shoot me, I’m not afraid to die’ in English and in Spanish,” said Cannella.
Capt. Robert Hovan and Det. Enrique Marrero were able to negotiate with Morel to drop his weapon 10 minutes later.
Morel was arrested and charged with violating a final restraining order, three counts of aggravated assault on a police officer and resisting arrest, among other offenses.
His bail was set at $25,000 no ten percent at North Bergen Municipal Court.
