Despite calls for his resignation as a result of signing over state checks as a campaign contribution, Bayonne Councilman Gary La Pelusa said he would not step down.
In a statement issued before a special meeting of the City Council on Aug. 31, La Pelusa said he felt he has done nothing wrong.
La Pelusa has admitted signing over his legislative checks to Assemblyman Anthony Chiaponne in 2005, which were in turn mostly put into Chiappone’s reelection fund, possibly in excess of legal amounts under state law.
The call for his resignation came from Anthony Ward before the meeting, claiming that La Pelusa had broken the law and should step down.
