Vega announces plan to save 22 police jobs

Mayor Silverio ‘Sal’ Vega of West New York has announced that the 22 officers who were on the verge of being laid off will be able to keep their jobs. During Tuesday’s press conference, the mayor said the township has come to an agreement with the Police Benevolent Association.
Vega said that his plan to save the money required to keep officers working will come from savings made by other town departments and from a new retirement plan that will allow police supervisors to collect their terminal leave benefit over a span of of up to 10 years, as opposed to a lump sum.
“This is a new and innovative concept that prevents any police lay-offs, protects tax payers, and reduces administrative costs and focuses our resources on protecting people,” said Vega. He also said there will be no increase in taxes next year.
