Time for reform

Dear Editor:
The latest shocking revelations from FBI Operation Bid Rig should be a wakeup call to Jersey City and all Hudson County voters. We need not accept this culture of pervasive corruption and incompetence long associated with our city, county, and state. It’s time to throw out the rascals and tighten up the ethics laws for public officials.
People need to understand that public officials who solicit and take bribes are not Robin Hoods. They benefit only themselves. Their corruption increases the cost of government (our taxes) and lowers the quality of education, public safety, and other community services. It lowers property values. And it demoralizes concerned citizens and honest public officials.
In Jersey City, only councilman Steve Fulop has sponsored meaningful legislation to stop “pay-to-play” and “double-dipping”. Mayor Healy whines that Fulop’s proposed laws would keep little guys from running for public office. Maybe we need some bigger, better qualified people in city and county government. They can be found in our city.

Sincerely,
Steve Lanset
