Hoboken Mayor Peter Cammarano is definitely resigning Friday — and it will be some time in the morning, sources confirmed. Cammarano is out on $100,000 bail after being arrested on federal extortion charges as part of a statewide FBI sting a week ago. While Cammarano’s closest advisors were still maintaining until the last minute that the resignation is not definite, most other sources said it is.
The New York Times just reported on their website that pressure from the governor and others was detrimental to Cammarano and to his family.
Now, the ambitious mayor, 32 years old and a former election law attorney, will see his mayoral term end less than a month after it began.
But who will succeed him? With various political factions constantly chomping at the bit to get power in this popular mile-square city, sources are reporting that the matter isn’t as clear as everyone thought.
If the mayor steps down, it would seem that Council President Dawn Zimmer, Cammarano’s recent election opponent, would become acting mayor until an election can be held in November.
But not so fast! Some say that a plan is being hatched by Zimmer’s allies for the council members to vote against Zimmer in such a way that she remains councilwoman and acting mayor at once — if that makes sense.
Others say that Zimmer supporters would like Councilwoman Carol Marsh, the former vice chairwoman of the Hudson County Democratic Organization, to become acting mayor while her ally Zimmer remains council president.
If Cammarano fails to resign, he can appoint an acting mayor himself.
