Mayor Silverio “Sal” Vega of West New York announced Wednesday that he has received written approval from the state civil service commission to extend the deadline for talks with the Police Benevolent Association PBA, local 361.
Originally, the deadline was set for this coming Friday to determine whether an agreement could be reached between the township and the police union on negotiations that could have potentially led to the firing of 22 police officers.
Vega announced that the new deadline will now be Sept. 14, 2009. “This means that the 22 West New York police officers who are affected will not be losing their jobs this Friday,” said Vega. “We will continue to negotiate in good faith with the PBA and will also now open negotiations with the police supervisors.”
