New Hoboken Mayor Peter Cammarano — who just took office 21 days ago — was arrested in an FBI political corruption sting. Longtime Secaucus Mayor Dennis Elwell and a Jersey City Deputy Mayor were also arrested.
A source said that the sting has to do with taking illegal cash campaign contributions.
Cammarano is an election attorney who at 32 is the youngest mayor in the city’s history.
Wednesday night, Cammarano was responding to the City Council’s refusal to quickly confirm his appointments for new City Hall directors. He made no mention of any problems.
The mayors will reportedly be arraigned on federal charges in Newark today.
Cammarano beat out Councilwoman Dawn Zimmer in a very close runoff election this past June.
Meanwhile, Dennis Elwell, the longtime mayor of Secaucus, is up for re-election in November, facing a tough campaign challenge from popular Secaucus Independent Councilman Michael Gonnelli.
Both mayors are Democrats, as are most of their political opponents. In terms of voter registration, Democrats outrank Republicans by 5 to 1, so most successful politicians in the area belong to that party.
Reports are that even influential rabbis have been arrested, as well as other politicians throughout the state.
