Fire causes shutdown of portion of Tonnelle Avenue through rush hour

The Jersey City Police Department announced that its Emergency Response team has closed off a section of Tonnelle Avenue northbound between Manhattan Avenue and County Road in Jersey City around 1 p.m. Monday afternoon until after rush hour, pending further notice.
According to police spokesperson Stan Eason, the closing is due to a fire that took place Monday morning around 9:30 a.m. at an abandoned factory located in the vicinity of North Street near Terrace Avenue, which overlooks Tonnelle Avenue. Eason said the fire caused enough damage that made the structure unstable. The structure will need to be torn down.
Eason said police is rerouting traffic trying to get access to the rest of Tonnelle Avenue going northbound. Entrance routes from Kennedy Blvd. to Tonnelle Avenue are shut down up to Secaucus Road, which authorities suggest be taken to get to Tonelle Avenue.
